Why Online Networking? How to Connect Meaningfully in the Digital Realm

Anyone who meets me recognizes my initial shyness. In elementary school, my only failing grade was participation, and some teachers were surprised I could even speak. Despite my withdrawn nature, I always enjoyed learning people’s stories and building meaningful relationships.

As an adult, I’m still quite introverted. I also recently discovered my neurodivergence and am processing how to build my network in the ways I know how. Although there’s undeniable value in in-person engagement, online networking is a powerful and effective strategy for finding a community you can lean on.

Let’s explore a few lightning-fast tips for fostering a tangible network that transcends your computer screen.

1. Remember: building your brand is a marathon, not a sprint.

Because I’m naturally withdrawn and prone to anxiety, I didn’t bother nurturing my digital presence. As I slowly came out of my shell, I realized I still felt the human need to be seen and recognized for my contributions. I thought about what it would look like to take control of my narrative and continue working on my LinkedIn and social profiles today to accurately reflect my character and goals.

However, I know that pacing is key for building a long-lasting and meaningful brand. It takes time, patience, and courage to mold a unique story. Ask yourself: what do you want the world to know you for? How do you want people to remember you? Get connected with your core values and allow them to guide your content and online interactions.

2. Create a routine for consistent engagement.

Most social media growth hacks suggest the same advice: post often and regularly. While this tip is valid, it’s a shortcut to burnout if you don’t prepare a realistic schedule that aligns with the rest of your responsibilities. Consider how much of your week you’re willing to commit to online networking. You can start small, then increase as you build momentum. Whether you want to attempt thirty minutes every other day or two hours a week, find a cadence that works best for you.

3. Be your authentic self.

I’ve had my share of networking blunders, and one of them was trying to be someone I’m not. It can easily come off as disingenuous and give people the wrong idea, no matter how well-intentioned your efforts.

Share and engage with content that truly resonates with you. Are you passionate about raising awareness for a cause? Did you feel compelled to identify a problem in your industry and provide a solution? Others are more likely to warm up to you when they sense your sincerity. Don’t be afraid to be genuine—it sets you apart.
